In 1969, Penelope Ashe published Naked Came the Stranger. It was a brilliant hoax – “Penelope Ashe” was actually a team of 24 award-winning journalist spearheaded by Newsday columnist Mike McGrady, including two Pulitzer Prize recipients, who had set out to write the worst possible erotic novel to parody the state of contemporary American literature. The book became a bestseller. Point made.
For a very different but no less amusing kind of literary prank, see The Dreadnought Hoax pulled off by young Virginia Woolf and her Bloomsbury posse.
